National Quantum Readiness Act Sets 2028 Deadline for Advanced Sensors and Domestic Tech Supply Chains

The National Quantum Readiness Act of 2026 is a strategic push to move quantum technology out of the lab and into the real world. By September 30, 2028, the Department of Defense is required to have three specific 'next-generation' quantum sensor projects ready for the field. Unlike the sensors in your phone today, quantum sensors can detect tiny changes in gravity or magnetic fields, which could eventually mean navigation systems that don't need GPS or medical imaging that’s more precise than anything we’ve seen. The bill sets a tight 60-day window for the Pentagon to pick these projects, signaling a shift from open-ended research to concrete results.

Building the Quantum Workbench

To make this happen, the bill calls for a massive coordination effort between the Departments of Defense, Commerce, and Energy, along with the National Science Foundation. Within 120 days, these agencies must create a plan to help American companies build the specialized components—like high-tech lasers and vacuum systems—that quantum computers and sensors need to function. One of the most practical shifts in this legislation is the requirement to open up 'Defense Quantum Foundry' resources to more domestic users within 180 days. By increasing access for researchers and private companies, the bill aims to speed up the trial-and-error process of tech development.
