The Fill the Lake Act creates a strict regulatory window from June 15 through September 15 each year to manage the water levels of Flathead Lake. Under Section 2, the Secretary of the Interior is legally required to keep the lake’s elevation between 2,892 and 2,893 feet above mean sea level. To hit these targets, the government must pull water from the Hungry Horse Reservoir if the lake gets too low and dump excess water downstream if it climbs too high. It is a precise technical mandate designed to keep the shoreline consistent during the peak summer season.
